Kilkenny manager Brian Cody has described the retirement of DJ Carey as "a sad day for hurling".

The five-times All-Ireland winner announced his retirement from inter-county action yesterday following a 19-year career.

The 35-year-old has picked up nine All-Star awards and is regarded as one of the best players to ever grace the sport.

"Hurling is losing an idol to all young players and hurling is losing the person who has been the top player over the past 20 years," Cody said last night.
