Richie Power is thrilled to win an All-Ireland senior medal alongside younger brother John today, even if his parents were so anxious they were up at the crack of dawn with nerves.
“When John got the nod it made it a family affair,” said Power senior, “But he showed good form leading up to the game and got his chance and took it well.
“It was an energy-sapping game, there wasn't a moment you could catch your breath. We knew we were in with a shout at half-time but that Tipp were going to come hard.
“We were in the same position three weeks ago but we knew there was loads in us. We promised each other in the dressing room that we'd leave everything on the field, and I knew if we did that we wouldn't be leaving empty handed.”
Richie wasn't surprised when John got the call-up to start.
“He was there in the Leinster final, he was there competing, as Brian says it's always done on training and he was showing form, he got his chance and he took it.
“It's one of those days, Walter (Walsh) had it in 2012 and it's up to these guys now to push on next year. He's set the marker and now he needs to go above that.
“It was, it was more emotional for Mam and Dad than it was for the two of us, I think they were up at six this morning to walk the block.
“They're immensely proud. I wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for them, I'm looking forward to seeing them back at the hotel and over the next couple of days we can sit down and really reflect. Obviously this is one we won't forget in a hurry.”
John didn't get detailed advice from big brother. All-Ireland finals are occasions where players sink or swim themselves.
“I just told him to throw the shackles off and hurl as he can, to make sure it didn't pass him by, because it can.
“In fairness I think he was more relaxed than me going into the game, but that's just the way John is. He's worked hard all year and gotten his reward.
“Definitely (not looking after him), I have to get my own performance right. Look, the two of us were preparing together, doing our recovery together, doing gym work together, but at five o'clock he had to go into his position and win his battle, and I had to go into my position and win mine.”
Power conceded this title was a little special after a disappointing 2013.
“Yeah, a lot of people wrote us off coming out of Thurles last year, they said this team is finished, to me that hurt a lot of guys. To see the commitment of lads to go back training when they did last year,
that showed they were hurting, that drives you on and got us over the line today.
“A lot went back early, they did. I went back myself a week after the county final, I knew myself I had to!
“Those are the things you have to do but you get your rewards and this is one of the sweetest we've ever won.”
