Kilkenny’s Michael Fennelly has announced that he is to retire from inter-county hurling, saying "I feel my body has surpassed its limits at this time".
The 32-year-old Ballyale Shamrocks man said he is grateful for a "fruitful 12-year tenure" with Kilkenny but is looking forward to spending his spare time with his new wife, Lesley.
Over the course of his decade-long career, Fennelly has won eight All-Ireland SHC titles, five National League titles, three All-Ireland club SHC titles, three All-Stars, 2011 Hurler of the Year, and he was the All-Ireland-winning captain in 2009.
In a statement, issued on his behalf, he thanked the supporters "from near and far for their support and kind words in the last decade and their unwavering support helped us to get us over the line in many last-minute deciders."
