Kavanagh and Shanahan win GPA awards

Longford's Brian Kavanagh and Waterford's Dan Shanahan have been named as Players of the Month for July by the Gaelic Players Association.

Longford's Brian Kavanagh and Waterford's Dan Shanahan have been named as Players of the Month for July by the Gaelic Players Association.

Kavanagh picked up the Footballer of the Month award after scoring eight points against Tipperary, seven frees against Derry and 1-6 against Kerry during the month.

Shanahan, meanwhile, has been named Hurler of the Month after notching up 1-5 from play in Waterford's win over Tipperary.

The GPA's Opel-sponsored awards were set up earlier this year as a rival to the Vodafone GAA Players of the Month awards

The Vodafone awards were announced yesterday, with Ross Munnelly named Footballer of the Month and Dan Shanahan Hurler of the Month.
