Injury-prone Kerry star set for eye surgery

David Moran's cruel run of luck with injuries continued on Saturday when the Kerry midfielder sustained a serious eye injury during a challenge game against Laois.

The 25-year-old has battled back from two cruciate knee ligament injuries in recent seasons, while his comeback earlier in the current campaign was disrupted by a shoulder problem.

Moran, having been introduced as a substitute, is understood to have been struck by a stray elbow during the pre-Championship clash with Laois.

He underwent specialist laser treatment on his eye at Cork University Hospital yesterday.

The full extent of the damage to his eye has yet to emerged, but the Irish Examiner has reported that Moran will certainly miss Kerry's Munster Championship opener against Tipperary on Sunday, May 26, as well as their probable semi-final against Waterford a week later.

It leaves Kerry boss Eamonn Fitzmaurice without one of his talented crop of midfielders.

During the recent Allianz League, Anthony Maher and free-taker Johnny Buckley were Fitzmaurice's preferred options in centre-field.

Kerry's former All-Star midfielder Bryan Sheehan, who missed a large chunk of the league with an ankle injury, admitted recently that he faces a fight on his hands to dislodge either Maher or Buckley for a Championship berth.
