Henry Shefflin expected to announce retirement tomorrow

By Peter McNamara

Speculation is rife throughout the country that the days of witnessing Henry Shefflin soar in Kilkenny’s famous black and amber are over.

Shefflin, winner of 10 All-Ireland SHC medals, has called a press conference for 12 noon tomorrow in the Set Theatre in The Langton Hotel where he will make a statement to the media.

The likelihood, of course, is the Ballyhale Shamrocks’ clubman will announce his retirement from the inter-county scene following the most glittering of careers.

Shefflin has had a number of interrupted campaigns in recent years due to a series of injuries.

However, having earned his 10th All-Ireland title under Brian Cody last September followed by Ballyhale’s success in the All-Ireland Club final on St Patrick’s Day against Kilmallock, Shefflin will be bowing out on the most glorious of notes.

Shefflin is widely recognised as one of Ireland’s greatest ever sports people, if not the greatest.
