Cork lead list of ladies football All Star nominees; Cora Staunton nominated for 11th award

The 45 nominees for the TG4 All Star team for 2016 have been announced today, with All Ireland champions, Cork, leading the way. The Rebels have with 11 nominees with runners up, Dublin, receiving eight nominations. Cora Staunton could earn her 11th TG4 All Star award as she is nominated in full forward and she is joined by three of her Mayo colleagues.

Ulster Champions, Monaghan receive 4 nominations, the same number as Donegal whilst TG4 Intermediate champions, Kildare, receive three nominations.

Cork legend Briege Corkery has already won nine TG4 All Star awards and could receive her tenth following her nomination in the middle of the field where she is joined as a nominee by her fellow 17 time All Ireland winner, Rena Buckley. All Ireland winning captain Ciara O’Sullivan is nominated at centre forward with Martina O’Brien, Marie Ambrose, Bríd Stack, Róisín Phelan, Vera Foley, Deirdre O’Reilly, Annie Walsh and shooting star Orla Finn being the other nominees from the champions.

Dublin have eight nominees for All Star awards as Sinead Goldrick is nominated for her fifth All Star in a row, she is joined by Sinead Finnegan, Noelle Healy, Carla Rowe, Sinead Aherne and Lyndsey Davey with Leah Caffrey and Olwen Carey nominated for what would be their first TG4 All Star awards.

Waterford have four nominees including all three Wall sisters; Mairead, Linda and Aileen along with Maria Delahunty. Mayo have four nominees including Sarah Tierney, Fiona McHale, Cora Staunton and Niamh Kelly. Monaghan and Donegal both have 4 nominees each as the McAnespie twins; Aoife and Ciara are both nominated along with Sharon Courtney and Gráinne McNally whilst Donegal are represented by Ciara Hegarty, Deirdre Foley, Niamh Hegarty and Yvonne McMonagle.

Westmeath, Kerry and Cavan all have one nominee each with Leona Archibold representing Westmeath and Aisling Doonan selected for Cavan along with 2 time All Star, Sarah Houlihan from the Kingdom. There is also a great representation of nominees from the Intermediate grade as 7 players are selected from that level. Intermediate champions Kildare have 3 nominations including their team captain, Aisling Holton, All Ireland final Player of the Match; Mary Hulgraine and half forward Roisin Byrne. Runners up, Clare, are represented by Laurie Ryan and Louise Henchy with Sligo’s Noelle Gormley nominated in goal and Tipperary stalwart, Jennifer Grant, completing the shortlist.

The 2016 TG4 All Star team will be announced at the gala ball at the Citywest Hotel on November 12th along with the Junior, Intermediate and Senior Player’s Player of the Year award winners, the Provincial Young Players of the Year and the 2016 inductee into the LGFA Hall of Fame.
