The €70m revamp of Páirc Uí Chaoimh was today given the go-ahead by An Bord Pleanála.
It is expected to create 400 direct and indirect construction jobs and give a 22 million boost to the local economy.
Work to demolish the old stadium is expected to start as early as February and the GAA aims to host games in the state-of-the-art facility by 2017.
Bob Ryan, chairman of the Cork County Board, said he was absolutely delighted with the decision, describing it as “great for Cork.”
Capacity will increase from 43,500 to 45,000, achieved through the addition of a three-tiered covered stand replacing the existing covered stand.
Refurbishments and extensions will also be made to both terraces and to the uncovered northern stand, which will be converted into a covered stand.
