Football League Division 4 round-up
Offaly, Carlow and Waterford all gained away victories in Division 4 of the Football League today, while Limerick registered a home win over Leitrim.
A strong second half display helped Offaly to a 1-13 to 1-05 triumph over London at Ruislip. The hosts were held to just one second half point as Emmet McDonnell's first league game in charge of the Faithfuls ended in an eight-point success.
London led by 1-4 to 0-5 at the interval with Sligo native Pauric McGoldrick netting a goal from a penalty in the opening minute.
The Exiles added further scores from Sean Kelly, with Bernard Allen keeping Offaly in touch.
Two quick points from Peter Cunningham tied the game on the restart, with Allen putting the visitors into a lead they would not relinquish.
Anton Sullivan scored Offaly's goal in the final quarter, in a game which saw Niall McNamee fail to feature for the visitors.
Meanwhile, Carlow held out for a 1-14 to 0-16 win over Tipperary at Semple Stadium in Thurles.
Tipperary led by 0-11 to 1-6 at the interval, with Carlow netting a goal late in the half from Paul Reid.
The visitors were dealt a blow before the break with an injury to Daniel St. Ledger, but were boosted by the inclusion of former Aussie Rules player Brendan Murphy.
The second half dismissal of Kieran Nolan threatened to derail Carlow's hopes, but scores from Eoghan Ruth and Darragh Foley pushed the Barrowsiders.
The sides were level on two further occasions late on, but Murphy pushed Carlow ahead in the 68th minute and they held on deserved for the two league points.
Waterford emerged as slender 1-9 to 0-11 victories over Clare in Milltown Malbay.
Despite playing against the wind in the second half, Waterford bounced back from a 0-7 to 0-5 interval deficit. Darren Guiry (1-1) netted a 48th minute goal.
David Tubridy impressed for Clare in this first round contest with five points. In all, there were six players on target for the hosts.
However, Waterford took victory with Robert Ahearne showing well in front of goal. He scored three points for the visitors.
Limerick were 0-11 to 0-9 winners over Connacht FBD League champions Leitrim at the Gaelic Grounds.
A late Paul Kinnerk point confirmed a two-point verdict for the Munster side in a game which saw Leitrim enjoy some decent spells in the second half.
A Paul Brennan point gave Leitrim a 0-5 to 0-4 half-time lead, but Eoghan O'Connor impressed from placed balls for Limerick, registering seven points in total as Maurice Horan's men triumphed.
