Ferguson steals points for Longford

Barry Ferguson played the captain’s role when scoring a late penalty to move Longford up to fourth place in the table.

Saints were the better side early on and Chris Armstrong brought a terrific reflex save from Stephen O’Brien on four minutes.

Town slowly got into it and Saints keeper Barry Ryan made a good stop to deprive Dessie Baker before the break.

Town were the better side in the second half and, having had two claims for a penalty waved away, were finally awarded one on 77 minutes when Stephen Caffrey handled Dave Mooney’s cross.

Ferguson drove the spot kick straight down the middle.
