Neale Fenn scored one and set up the second as Dundalk heaped further early season misery on Shamrock Rovers at Tallaght Stadium.

It was a second home defeat in six days for Michael O’Neill’s title-hopefuls who now languish third bottom of the table and eight points behind champions Bohemians.

A fully deserved first league win over Rovers in 13 years moves Dundalk up to third in the table.

Dundalk took the lead on 35 minutes when Ross Gaynor’s delightful ball put striker Fenn in to cleverly poke past Alan Mannus for a superbly executed goal.

It got worse for Rovers within three minutes of the second half. Fenn was again involved when he chested down skipper Liam Burns' free-kick to set up midfielder Stephen Maher who drilled past Mannus.
