Elliott pleased with Chicago ahead of National27/03/2012 - 11:17:05
Gordon Elliott is happy with Chicago Grey’s preparation ahead of the John Smith’s Grand National.
The Co Meath trainer took the world’s greatest steeplechase with Silver Birch in 2007 and reports his latest contender to be in the form of his life.
“It’s all systems go to the National and we’re looking forward to it,” said Elliott.
“We’re training him as normal, but we’ll pop him over a fence the week before the race, but he seems to be in good form so we’re very happy.”
Chicago Grey, generally available at 20-1 for the Aintree spectacular on April 14, made his last public appearance at Gowran Park in mid-February when he was a staying-on second to Rubi Light over an inadequate two and a half miles.
David Pipe has warned the participation of The Package in the Grand National is not guaranteed after his exertions at Cheltenham.
Unseated in the 2010 running, the nine-year-old was off for nearly 18 months until his return at the Festival.
“The Package, who ran such a great race after a long absence to finish a close fourth in the JLT Specialty Chase at the Cheltenham Festival has taken a little longer to get over his race than we would have hoped,” the trainer told www.davidpipe.com.
“We are still hopeful that he will make the line-up, so I would advise any ante-post punters to hold fire until bookmakers are offering the non-runner, no bet concession.”
Pipe had positive news of his other Grand National entries, adding: “With less than three weeks to go I am pleased to report that the preparation of Junior is coming along well and he remains firmly on course for Aintree.
“Swing Bill, who is 43rd in the list of weights for the Grand National and guaranteed to be at least a reserve on the day, is almost certain to get in the final line-up.”
