Drogheda signs Finnish keeper
Drogheda United have been quick off the mark on the transfer scene with the news that they have signed Finnish goalkeeper Mikko Vilmunen.
The 6 foot 4 inch 28-year-old Finn spent a week at the Drogs’ training facility at Mosney and according to manager Paul Doolin he made a good impression.
“Mikko is similar in stature to Dan Connor and looks a decent goalkeeper. Charlie Tracey did really well for us this year, but if you want to do things at the top level you need strong competition throughout the team and not just in the outfield positions.
Vilmunen, first choice keeper at FC Haka who finished 3rd in third in the Finish championship, was recommended to Drogheda by his compatriot Sami Ristila.
According to Ristila: “Mikko is delighted to be coming to Ireland and will be a great addition to the club.
“Mikko is an experienced goalkeeper with decent European experience,” Ristila added.
More good news for Drogheda United is that Sami Ristila and Paul Keegan have extended their contracts to 2008.
Sami has been with the club since 2004 and while also being an important squad member, has agreed to take charge of our Under-21 side this year. He will be assisted by the experienced Simon Webb.
Paul Keegan has been capped at Under-21 level this year and although he has attracted interest from a number of other clubs he has decided to commit himself to Drogheda United until the end of the 2008 season.
Drogheda United have released goalkeeper Charlie Tracey and midfielder Derek Tyrell. The club would like to thank them both for the dedication and commitment during their time with the Club.
The above signings are subject to international clearance and registration approval from the eircom League.
