DJ Carey in stable condition after suspected heart attack

Five-time All-Ireland winner DJ Carey is in a stable condition in hospital after he collapsed in Kilkenny city yesterday.

The 41-year-old collapsed in the public waiting room of a Garda station yesterday morning and was taken to St Luke’s hospital, where was said to be comfortable.

The non-smoker and non-drinker has endured a traumatic period following the collapse of his cleaning businesses, inquiries he called for into suspected fraud at his former companies, and the breakup of his relationship to businesswoman Sarah Newman.

Mr Carey has two sons, Michael and Sean, and was married to Christine until they separated nine years ago.

He was one of the most decorated hurlers of all time, and won 10 provincial medals and nine All-Star commendations alongside his All-Ireland medals.

He was twice named hurler of the year.
