Dempsey leaves job due to commuting distance
Luke Dempsey has confirmed his departure from the Carlow senior football manager role, following tonight's four-point loss to Laois in the All-Ireland SFC qualifiers.
The Kildare native took the Carlow job in November 2008 and during his time at the helm, he also took control of the county's Under-21 side.
Dempsey said that the distance from his home in Mullingar to Carlow for training was a contributing factor in his decision.
"I said to myself this year that to stay on, there would have to be strong structures in place for next year," he admitted after tonight's 1-10 to 0-9 defeat.
"This was always going to be my last year - the distance from Mullingar to Carlow has really taken its toll on me in this last year.
"The journey was very onerous at times, so I have decided to call a halt to my four years...four years that were really enjoyable working in Carlow with great people."
Dempsey added: "Sean Kavanagh, Adrian Corcoran were excellent selectors, Wayne Middleton the trainer and Anthony Rainbow whom I introduced this year.
"In those lads, if they agree to stay on I think there is great structures in place for next year, along with most of those players who really put in a massive effort for Carlow this year.
"They didn't get the results. But if their performances keep improving, there is no reason why they won't."
