Hammers welcome Magnusson

West Ham fans were out in force to welcome new chairman Eggert Magnusson to Upton Park in the hope that the Icelandic takeover would also herald a new era of success on the pitch.

The Hammers still have relegation worries, however, and kicked off today’s Barclays Premiership match against Sheffield United in 16th place.

Manager Alan Pardew opted not to make changes from the side which lost at Chelsea, the fit-again Yossi Benayoun having to make do with a place on the bench.

Sheffield United arrived at a ground where they had not been beaten in the top flight since 1975 in the knowledge that three points would take them above their hosts and out of the bottom three.

Manager Neil Warnock made one change from the side which lost 2-1 at home to Manchester United last week, Nick Montgomery coming in for Colin Kazim-Richards.
