Connacht FBD League round-up
NUI Galway and Roscommon produced deserved wins in the opening round of the Connacht FBD League this afternoon.
At Tuam Stadium, NUI Galway as they ran out 2-8 to 1-8 winners over Galway. Goals in either half from Neil Douglas (1-1) and Aidan Mullan saw John Maughan's charges get the result.
The students made full use of a strong wind at their backs in the opening half. Jason Doherty and Fiachra Deasmhunaigh struck 0-3 apiece, helping their side to a 1-7 to 1-3 interval lead.
Matthew Clancy kept Tomas O Flaharta's side in touch with a 24th minute goal, while free-taker Sean Armstrong added three points.
Galway bounced back on the restart thanks to points from Fiachra Breathnach (0-1) and Jonathan Ryan (0-3).
However, NUIG always looked dangerous with Derry native Mullan on target for his side's second goal. Ryan and Armstrong claimed late points, but Galway could not get the goal they craved so badly.
Meanwhile, Roscommon put home advantage to good use as they beat Leitrim 0-7 to 0-5 at Elphin.
Leitrim led by 0-4 to 0-2 at half-time, thanks to late points from Ray Mulvey and Barry Prior after the sides had been tied on two occasions early on.
Roscommon turned the tide on the restart, helped by a four-point haul from the impressive Mark Reynolds.
Leitrim had a goal chance with four minutes remaining from Brian McDonald to pull the game out of the fire. However, McDonald's effort was saved by Roscommon goalkeeper Mark Miley.
