Clontarf score bonus-point win over Shannon

Clontarf 32 Shannon 17
Clontarf completed a season’s double over Shannon with a come-from-behind victory at Castle Avenue.

Andy Wood’s men came good in the second half, running in tries through Matt D’Arcy, Tadhg Furlong, Adrian D’Arcy and Mark Flanagan for a hard-earned bonus point.

Flanker John Shine’s third try of the Ulster Bank League campaign got Shannon off to a promising start. That was in response to an early Richie Lane penalty.

A second three-pointer from Lane closed the gap, but very good driving from the Shannon forwards saw them end the first half in the ascendancy.

With Munster veteran Marcus Horan proving influential for the second match running, the visitors used their scrum to telling effect and number 8 Dan Heffernan got the touchdown in the corner for a 12-6 scoreline.

But it was effectively one-way traffic in the second period, with Shannon’s only score coming late on through experienced winger David O’Donovan.

Half-backs Darragh Fitzpatrick and Sam Cronin grew in influence for the home side, and the tries followed including a well-taken effort from Leinster lock Mark Flanagan.

He was back in harness with Ben Reilly, one of the heroes of the Ireland Club side’s win over England last weekend.

Winger Lane, another player who excelled at that level in the recent past, kicked 12 points in all for ‘Tarf - bringing his haul for the season to 78.

Scorers:
Clontarf: Tries: Matt D’Arcy, Tadhg Furlong, Adrian D’Arcy, Mark Flanagan; Cons: Richie Lane 3; Pens: Richie Lane 2
Shannon: Tries: John Shine, Dan Heffernan, David O’Donovan; Con: Rob Guerin
HT: Clontarf 6 Shannon 12
