City's Barton gets pay rise

04/05/2003 - 12:14:14
Kevin Keegan has promised to renegotiate Joey Barton's new contract - before it has even been signed.

The 20-year-old has broken into Manchester City's side in the final weeks of the season and produced a string of outstanding performances.

Manager Keegan plans to come up with a pay rise for the youngster and even plans to review the one-year deal originally offered to him.

Keegan said: "Joey has a desire and a hunger. He's on £500 (€700) a week. He's got a one-year deal on the table because I offered him that before he got into the first team.

"He said to me that he wasn't bothered about money, he just wanted to play for the club. I may have to look at adjusting his new contract a bit now. It's already been improved but I'll have to improve it again.

"He's proved himself, not just against Liverpool but ever since he got into the team and he has played six games now."

Keegan added: "When we give contracts to players we do it on what we have seen, and what we've seen in the last few weeks when Joey has got his chance in the first team is that he can play at this level.

"He wants to be in the Premiership and has a tremendous desire to stay in the team.

"He deserves to be rewarded for that because he has contributed."
