Cahillane and Strong set for Laois debuts

Darren Strong and former Glasgow Celtic triallist Paul Cahillane will make their first Championship starts for Laois against Meath in Sunday's Leinster SFC quarter-final at Croke Park (throw-in 2pm).

Darren Strong and former Glasgow Celtic triallist Paul Cahillane will make their first Championship starts for Laois against Meath in Sunday's Leinster SFC quarter-final at Croke Park (throw-in 2pm).

Cahillane has been pencilled in at right corner forward, while Emo clubman Strong will also make his SFC bow at left half-forward.

Cahillane impressed during Portlaoise's run in the AIB Club Championships last year, which saw the Laois club take Leinster honours before losing out to Clare's Kilmurry-Ibrickane in the All-Ireland semi-final.

The NUI Maynooth student comes into the Laois attack with regular free-taker MJ Tierney losing out.

There is no place in the side either for former midfielder Padraig Clancy, despite suggestions that he may have been earmarked for a role at full-forward. He has, however, been included on the bench.

Clancy failed to feature for the O'Moore men during their recent National League campaign, which saw them finish mid table in Division 2 after a heavy defeat to Donegal and losses also to Armagh, Meath and Down.

Meanwhile, former Aussie rules star Colm Begley will make his return to Championship action at wing back, having already featured at this level in 2005 before heading Down Under.

LAOIS (SFC v Meath): M Nolan; P O'Leary, M Timmons, P McMahon; C Healy, C Ryan, C Begley; B Quigley, K Meaney; B Sheehan, C Rogers, D Strong; P Cahillane, D Kingston, R Munnelly.
