Airtricity League roundup: UCD notch first win of season

UCD stunned Shamrock Rovers 2-0 at the UCD Bowl to lift themselves off the foot of the table with their first win of the season.

Despite dominating much of the game, Rovers fell behind on 75 minutes when College defender Hugh Douglas headed home a Sean Russell free-kick. Russell, son of manager Martin, then added a second goal four minutes into stoppage time at the death as Rovers lost in the league for the second week running.

Second in the table Derry City came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw against St. Patrick's Athletic in the match of the night at Richmond Park.

Winger Conan Byrne scored for the third match running to put St. Pat's in front on 21 minutes, skipping through onto John Russell's pass to shoot past Ger Doherty.

But Derry levelled eight minutes before half-time when Michael Rafter latched onto the rebound of his initial shot, which had come back off defender Conor Kenna, to rifle home. Doherty then made a terrific save in stoppage time to deprive Christy Fagan a St. Pat's winner.

Dundalk beat Cork City 2-0 at Oriel Park to deservedly get their first home win of the season.

John Mountney put Dundalk in front on 76 minutes, his half volley from a John Sullivan throw looping over Mark McNulty in the Cork goal.

Substitute Pat Hoban added the second goal in the final minute. Keith Ward crashed a free-kick off the Cork crossbar and Hoban reacted quickest to head the ball home.

Chris Lyons scored twice as Bohemians got back to winning ways with a 3-2 win over fellow strugglers Bray Wanderers at Dalymount Park.

Lyons tapped home a cross from Andy Mulligan for the lead goal on 12 minutes.

Bray levelled with a bit of a fluke on 24 minutes when Gary Dempsey’s shot took a wicked deflection off a prostrate Marty Waters to spin over Dean Delany to the net.

Waters then drilled a shot off a post as Bray were unlucky not to be ahead at the break.

But Bohs hit back in second half and Lyons skipped through onto Ryan McEvoy’s ball over the top to lob them back in front on 64 minutes.

Three minutes later Dave Mulcahy powered a McEvoy free-kick to the net with a bullet header for the third.

A lovely 73rd minute sidefooted finish from John Mulroy gave Bray hope, but Bohs held out for a big win.
