Actress Renee Zellweger was so desperate to witness US President Barack Obama's inauguration she launched a last-minute bid to get to Washington DC alone.

The star shunned her celebrity status on January 20, and went unrecognised by the two million civilians swarming the nation's capitol after she bundled up to watch Obama's swearing-in ceremony.

Zellweger insists she was content to give up the company of celebrity revellers, including Oprah Winfrey and Sean 'Diddy' Combs, who watched Obama take his oath from the front rows.

"I just had to be there," she said. "I was a bit obsessed... so, with no tickets, and no plan, and no access, I got on a train and I just went.

"I walked for three hours and stood on a police barricade... I was prepared for the crowd, I was prepared for the cold, I wasn't prepared for how emotional it was going to be. I am so glad I was there, regardless of the fact I couldn't feel my toes for three days after the fact."
