Why is Mary Berry cutting a slice from a giant floral cake?

Famed chef and Great British Bake Off judge Mary Berry looked delighted to be presented with a giant floral cake, designed by florist Simon Lycett.

The 80-year-old, who wore a flowery blazer for the occasion, was opening the Royal Horticultural Society’s Wisley Flower Show in Surrey – and she was clearly excited to pose with the cake-shaped creation.

The ‘Victoria Sponge’ cake uses late summer flowers, including carnations, chrysanthemums and roses. It’s a whopping 60cm tall, and 80cm wide.

Mary is a keen gardener as well as an ambassador for the Royal Horticultural Society, while Simon is florist to the Royals and celebrities from across the world.
