Wednesday's TV tips

DRAMA: Red Rock (TV3, 8.30pm)

The debut episode of Ireland’s newest continuing drama will introduce us to two main families – The Kielys and The Hennessys.

In tonight's episode, Patricia Hennessy suspects it was Katie Kiely who took the money from the pub and reports her to the Gardaí but when questioned, Katie, fearless as ever, is adamant she is not the culprit. But if it wasn’t Katie, who was it?

Meanwhile, Sharon shows partner Paudge the CCTV footage of Brian kissing a schoolgirl in his car.

Paudge knows Sharon is right but he also knows that going any further about it will cause too much grief internally and he wants nothing to do with it. Sharon is uncertain about what to do.

FILM: The Blues Brothers (ITV4, 9pm)

(1980) Loveable criminals Jake and Elwood Blues visit the Chicago orphanage where they were raised.

When they discover it will be closed down unless the nuns who run it pay the back taxes they owe, Jake launches a holy mission to revive the old Blues Brothers Band to raise money for its salvation.

This is an hilarious farce, based on the characters from American TV’s Saturday Night Live and is completely nutty from start to finish.

John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd give career-best performances as the deadpan anti-heroes, and there are too many star cameos to mention.

One of director John Landis’ last great comic extravaganzas and certainly much better than the sequel, Blues Brothers 2000.

Starring: John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Cab Calloway, Carrie Fisher, John Candy, John Lee Hooker

COOKERY: The Restaurant (TV3 9pm)

Maitre'D John Healy returns with Sean Moncrieff as the voice of the 10th series of The Restaurant, alongside resident critics Tom Doorley, Paolo Tullio, and a guest critic each week.

The hugely popular Irish reality television series will see six celebrities become head chefs over six weeks.

In the fourth episode of the brand new series, State Pathologist, Marie Cassidy, will be joined by special guest critic Marco Pierre White.

They will be whisked off to the home of The Restaurant - the stunning Wineport Lodge in Glasson, Co Westmeath, where Marie will attempt to produce a top-class, three course menu with two value-for-money wines.

DEBATE: The People’s Debate with Vincent Browne (TV3, 10pm)

The People’s Debate with Vincent Browne is on the road around Ireland Tonight we will be in Charleville.

In every constituency we’ll be inviting sitting TDs to discuss local and national issues among their own constituents.

DOCUMENTARY: The Holocaust: A Story of Remembrance (BBC1, 11.10pm)

Every year, on January 27, people across the world take time to pay tribute to those who died in the Holocaust, and to remind themselves that such an atrocity must not be allowed to happen again.

This year, the date is especially poignant as it marks the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, but as the number of living survivors grows ever smaller, how can we make sure that it is never forgotten?

In this documentary, three women reveal their own personal stories to show why the memory of the Holocaust must be kept alive.

Auschwitz survivor Kitty Hart-Moxon reveals that talking about her experiences was particularly difficult in a post-war world that seemingly didn’t want to acknowledge the full horror of what happened.

Children’s author, Judith Kerr, whose much-loved works include The Tiger that Came to Tea and When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, tells the story of her childhood escape from Germany, and Senior Reform Rabbi Laura Janner-Klausner journeys to Lithuania to learn more about her ancestors’ fate at the hands of the Nazis.

FILM: The Mexican (BBC1, 12.25am)

(2001) Jerry Welbach is a hapless small-time crook who has to retrieve a priceless pistol known as The Mexican from across the border.

He accepts but his girlfriend Samantha isn’t pleased and leaves him. But then she is kidnapped by hitman Leroy, who agrees to exchange her for the pistol. Now Jerry is in real trouble...

Director Gore Verbinski threads back and forth between the storylines while Brad Pitt plays it for laughs, Julia Roberts and James Gandolfini form a sparky double act.

At two hours, it is a little overlong but at least the film ends with a bang.

Starring: Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, James Gandolfini, Gene Hackman, JK Simmons

FILM: Transamerica (Channel 4, 1.20am)

(2005) Bree is a pre-op transsexual on the brink of having surgery who is aghast to learn he has a teenage son, thanks to a brief relationship with a woman.

Making matters even more complicated, the lad is flirting with a life of crime on New York’s streets, and the person called upon to steer him back on the straight and narrow is Bree.

The latter is forced to set aside his grand plan and embark on an equally amazing journey, embracing the joys – and miseries – of parenthood.

Leading lady Felicity Huffman’s performance is outstanding, and she was quite rightly nominated for an Oscar.

Young actor Kevin Zegers (of the cheesy Air Bud movies) is also on fine form as the surprise son, but it’s the relationship between the two that really brings this classy offering to life.

Starring: Felicity Huffman, Kevin Zegers, Fionnula Flanagan, Elizabeth Pena, Danny Burstein
