Tuesday’s TV tips

Big Fish (Film4, 6.35pm)

(2003) Will Bloom (Billy Crudup) has spent his entire life listening to his larger-than-life father Edward (Albert Finney) regale family and friends with tall tales of the apparently extraordinary adventures of his youth (played in flashback by Ewan McGregor).

When Edward falls gravely ill, Will is now drawn back to the family homestead, where he hopes to settle his differences with his estranged dad.

This is a stunning fable about dysfunctional families and miscommunication between the generations, imbued with acclaimed director Tim Burton’s trademark offbeat sense of humour and quirky visual styling.

The Hairy Bikers’ Northern Exposure (BBC2, 8pm)

New series. Simon King and Dave Myers explore Poland, and create sausages in the countryside with a family who have been making them for generations.

The bikers also visit the home of Copernicus, the astronomer who changed the way stargazers look at the universe.

There are poignant moments when they visit the Treblinka Extermination Camp, and hailing from ship building communities, Si and Dave are keen to visit the great shipyards of Gdansk to honour the men and women who stood up to the Soviet regime.

I Want That Wedding! (Channel 5, 8pm)

Clips from lavish, creative and downright quirky ceremonies amply illustrate the different ways in which couples choose to spend their wedding day.

Among those featured are Anita, a long-time Take That fan, who wanted Gary Barlow to perform at their wedding, and she recalls how she started an online crusade with her friends to have her biggest wish come true.

Also on the show are Amy and Steve, who planned a festival-themed wedding, using tickets instead of invitations, with bride and groom trolls as table decorations.

Celebrity Big Brother (TV3, 9pm)

Highlights of all the latest events inside the House as celebrities from the UK and USA take part in the ultimate CBB battle.

Expect all the excitement of a big sporting event as the Brits and the Yanks come head-to-head in a trial of tasks, challenges and twists. It's eviction night - who will go?

Penelope Keith’s Hidden Villages (More4, 9pm)

The Good Life actress sets off on another journey to explore some of the nation’s smallest communities, beginning with visits to Devon and Cornwall.

It’s an area dotted with rugged coastal communities and distinct identities that have been forged over centuries, but also a region visited by five million people each year.

Highlights include a former silver mining village, a cliff-edge fishing village, the most exposed theatre in the country, and the small communities near Fowey Harbour.

India: Nature’s Wonderland (BBC2, 9pm)

New series.

Wildlife expert Liz Bonnin, Slumdog Millionaire actor Freida Pinto and mountaineer Jon Gupta explore the hidden wonders of the natural world in India, starting with Liz visiting the Gir Forest, home to the world’s last Asiatic lions, where she witness two females hunting, before watching elephants walking through a tea plantation.

Freida meets a man who has dedicated his life to the Hoolock gibbon, India’s only ape, which starts the morning by singing.

Jon climbs into the Himalayas and stops off at Debprayag to bathe in the sacred waters at a holy place where the River Ganges begins.

New Tricks (BBC1, 9pm)

With Sasha back on fighting form, UCOS investigate the death of a talented cricket prodigy, who was the apple of his father’s eye, yet loathed by his on-field team-mates.

The death was recorded as misadventure but with new evidence pointing to infighting, over-zealous autograph hunters and extra marital affairs, UCOS are soon bowled over by the list of potential murder suspects.

Meanwhile, wise to Steve’s monetary problems, Danny appoints himself as his personal financial adviser. Detective drama, starring Larry Lamb.

How The Rich Get Hitched (C4, 10pm)

Everybody knows that weddings are costly affairs, with bills often running into the thousands.

While most engaged couples attempt to keep the price of their big day down, there are others who regard spending as much as possible as a badge of honour – and many of the brides involved head to Caroline Castigliano’s shop in Knightsbridge to search for the perfect dress, which can cost up to £40,000.

The rich, the royal and the famous have all used Caroline’s services, and now we’re going to get a peak inside her establishment. Among those she assists are Jordan, the heiress to a British hotel business, and is travelling to London from the north of England for her fittings.

Meanwhile, an Iranian socialite arrives to try on her dress – which is covered in 200,000 sequins and 50,000 beads.

The Genius of George Boole (RTE One, 10.35pm)

Narrated by Oscar-winning actor Jeremy Irons, The Genius of George Boole assembles academics and industry leaders from across the globe to explore the life and importance of one of the world’s greatest unsung heroes.

The film looks back at how and why the newly-founded Queen’s College, Cork (now known as UCC) opened in 1849, provided him with a job as its first Professor of Mathematics and, in turn, the financial resources to support his family back in England.

Let the Right One In (Film4, 11.30pm)

(2008) Set predominantly in a housing estate in ’80s Stockholm, this unconventional coming of age story centres on 12-year-old loner Oskar (Kare Hedebrant), who lives with his divorced mother and is bullied mercilessly at school.

Escaping for fresh air in the courtyard one night, Oskar meets Eli (Lena Leandersson), a little girl of a similar age who seems just as disenchanted with the world.

She lives with her guardian, who often goes out late, leaving the girl alone in their apartment. Oskar senses there is something different about his new friend and asks her tentatively, “Are you a vampire?” She seems unsurprised, responding: “I live off blood, yes.”

As the relationship between the two deepens, Oskar finds the courage to stand up to the bullies with his voracious friend by his side.
