Tuesday's TV Tips

Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners (C4, 8pm)

Cleaning obsessives Hayley and Dann head for Plas Teg, a 17th-century Jacobean manor in the heart of Flintshire, north Wales.

This 10-bedroom Italian-inspired residence is home to Cornelia and her 12 cats, and is also said to be one of the most haunted houses in Wales.

Cornelia is desperate to generate income to restore the Grade I listed building to its former glory, so Hayley and Dann have agreed to spend five days cleaning alongside her, pushing their boundaries and challenging their germ phobia.

Arbitrage (Film4, 9.00pm)

(2012) Richard Gere delivers one of his finest performances in Nicholas Jarecki’s taut drama about the corrupting influence of money.

Multi-billionaire Robert Miller (Gere) is poised to sell his hedge fund and add to his vast profits.

Unbeknown to all his friends and family, including his wife Ellen (Susan Sarandon) and daughter Brooke (Brit Marling), Robert has massaged his accounts in order to avoid a lengthy spell in jail for fraud.

Just when it seems like he might get away with his misdemeanour, Robert is involved in a car accident that kills his mistress Julie (Laetitia Casta).

Determined to ensure the sale of the hedge fund proceeds without delay, Robert calls on a shady acquaintance (Nate Parker) to help him cover up the crime, but a tenacious police detective (Tim Roth) is on his trail.

Benefits by the Sea: Jaywick (C5, 9pm)

Once billed as an idyllic seaside holiday village, Jaywick in Essex is now blighted by dilapidated homes, boarded-up shops and discarded mattresses.

Two years ago, according to the Government’s Indices of Multiple Deprivation, the down-at-heel suburb of nearby Clacton was ranked as the most deprived place in England and Wales.

This new series follows some of the 5,000 residents in the north Essex community, showing the reality of life on the breadline.

The first edition features cat-loving ex-con Fred, who struggles to survive the winter in his unheated caravan and single father Carl who is facing eviction because his literacy problems make it impossible for him to read warning letters from the housing benefit office.

The Syndicate (BBC1, 9pm)

It’s the day of Hazelwood Manor’s grand opening, and while Godfrey has a meticulous checklist of the day’s timings, Nick’s revelation that Spencer Cavendish was the last person seen dragging Amy away from his caravan rings in Dawn’s ears.

She asks Sean to take her to Spencer’s yacht to get some answers, and when the cad appears with a scratched face, her suspicions are aroused.

Meanwhile, Lord Hazelwood attempts to convince Julie to confess all to Sarah or they risk losing everything. Kay Mellor’s drama, starring Lenny Henry and Elizabeth Berrington. Last in the series.

Not Safe for Work (Channel 4, 10pm)

Katherine only moved to Northampton last week, in the first episode of this promising sitcom, but could her days there already be numbered?

Not only does Jeffries reveal she is really there to streamline the department, but Katherine is preoccupied with the anniversary of a traumatic event from her past.

Unfortunately, her way of dealing with her demons involves making a show of herself at her welcome drinks, before revealing a dark secret about Anthony.

However, it seems Katherine still has boss Danny on side as she helps him delay the presentation to the minister.

Imagine: Beware of Mr Baker (BBC1, 10.35pm)

In this award-winning documentary, Cream drummer Ginger Baker reflects on his 60-year career, which began in the jazz clubs of Soho and led to sell-out stadium concerts, via the back streets of Lagos, Nigeria.

Director Jay Bulger catches up with the musician at his South African ranch to talk drums, drugs and everything in-between.

However, it remains to be seen whether the young film-maker has bitten off more than he can chew.

Goon (Film 4, 11.10pm)

(2011) Dim-witted yet lovable Doug Glatt (Seann William Scott) works as a bouncer in Orangetown, Massachusetts, to the despair of his parents (Eugene Levy, Ellen David).

At an ice hockey match, a fellow spectator makes a homophobic jibe about Doug’s gay brother, Ira (David Paetkau), and the bouncer shows his displeasure with his fists.

The coach of the local team is impressed with Doug’s fighting skills and best friend Ryan (Jay Baruchel) encourages him to try out as an enforcer, who protects team-mates using any part of his battered body.

After just one season on the ice, Doug’s skills see him transferred to the Halifax Highlanders in Nova Scotia.

Adapted from the book by Adam Frattasio and Doug Smith, Michael Dowse’s film is a pleasant surprise: a macho comedy awash with fisticuffs that slap shots into our affections.

** New Series ** The Big C (RTE Two, 11.45pm)

Five months after nearly dying in Puerto Rico, Cathy is at home in Minneapolis recovering from brain surgery and looking forward to celebrating Adam’s 16th birthday.
