Tuesday’s TV tips

DOCUMENTARY: Water: Why pay for it? (TV3, 9pm)

From the beginning of October, we will all be charged for water.

This programme will explain how the charges will work and why they are needed. We will see up close our creaking water systems and hear from people whose supply is unsafe to drink.

Experts, critics and householders themselves all give their views on paying for something which is essential for life.

FOOD: Ramsay’s Costa Del Nightmares (Channel 4, 9pm)

Gordon Ramsay’s new series sees him travelling to some tourist hotspots, but don’t expect him to spend his days lying on the beach, topping up his tan.

Instead, he’s coming to the aid of Brits who is some cases have sunk all their savings into following their dream of setting up a restaurant into sun, only to face financial ruin.

His first port of call is Fuengirola, on the Costa del Sol, where Londoner Pat and her husband Jack set up the Mayfair 28 years ago. With a prime seafront location, their restaurant should be packed, but they are struggling to attract customers – something Gordon thinks could be down to the place being stuck in a 1970s time warp.

He also thinks the staff could do with a bit of a shake-up, but the biggest problems are arguably in the management. The owners’ children think it’s time for their parents to retire and give son Jon a chance to run the place, but Jack is refusing to give up control.

Can Gordon sort things out while there’s a still a business for them to argue over?

DOCUMENTARY: I Married the Waiter: Love in the Sun (UTV, 9pm)

To paraphrase Grease, summer lovin’ may be a blast, but for a lot of people it ends the moment their plane lands back in Britain.

But this documentary meets the women whose holiday romances with men they met in the sun outlasted their tans, and finds out whether their stories had happy endings.

Among those featured are Fleur Ozdemir, who first met her now-husband Ferit when she was on a girlie holiday to Turkey in 2009.

The couple now reside in Newcastle and are expecting their first child, but he admits that adjusting to life in England – and the Geordie accent – has sometimes been a challenge.

For some of the women, the culture clash has gone the other way, as Anne Zouroudi reveals her husband George, who she met in Symi in 1990, expected her to become a traditional Greek wife, something she struggled with – but it did inspire her to begin a new career.

And we also meet Dorothy, who at the age of 70, married a 21-year-old Tunisian man.

MAGIC: Tricked (ITV2, 9pm)

For one of his first tricks in this new series, magician Ben Hanlin sets out to bamboozle Joey Essex with a time-travel illusion.

Now, some more cynical viewers may be wondering quite how impressive that is, but those doubts should soon evaporate once they see some of Hanlin’s other extraordinary stunts and sleights of hand.

This opening episode also sees him taking a trip down Coronation Street to surprise actresses Brooke Vincent and Amy Kelly, and locking Geordie Shore star Charlotte Crosby in a sauna.

But members of the public are also on the receiving end of his powers, as he plots with a bride to fool the wedding party into believing that the entire big day has been ruined, and helping someone else to get their revenge on a friend by convincing them gangsters are out to get them.

And if that all sounds a bit more Jeremy Beadle than Dynamo, never fear – they are plenty of moments of magic as well.

SCIENCE: Drunk (RTE Two, 9.30pm)

Presented by Eoghan McDermott. Drunk is a brand new science-based television series which will explore what happens to us when we drink.

The series will put some of our commonly held perceptions about alcohol under the microscope.

There are two aspects to the production.

In a controlled studio environment volunteers will be invited to drink, and possibly get drunk, in front of the cameras. While under the influence of alcohol, these volunteers will take on a range of specially designed tasks and challenges which will help the programme explore, explain and illustrate the effect of drinking on the body and mind.

The programme will also observe ordinary people drinking in real life situations where cameras will follow people in a social setting, filming them before, during and after drinking.

In Episode One we look at the phenomenon known as Beer Goggles. We look at alcohol as a social – and anti social – lubricant. And we look at the effects of drinking on our brain function and how that relates to motor skills, reaction time and balance – with some surprising results.

We also get a slice of our drinking culture by observing a group of friends on a night out in Wexford town to celebrate a birthday.

FILM: The Three Musketeers (Film4, 9pm)

(2011) A steampunk reworking of the Alexandre Dumas’ classic swashbuckler.

As ever, it concerns a hot-headed swordsman who goes on a quest to join the King of France’s royal guard. He hits it off with a trio of former members who have fallen into disgrace, and they all join up to defeat a plot to overthrow the king by an English lord who’s built a deadly war airship.

Is It Any Good? The unique selling point in this version is airships, which gives a new level to the thrust and parry of the drama.

The special effects alone are worth tuning in for and the film stays slick and stylish right up until the end credits roll. The fact Andrew (House of Cards) Davies co-wrote the script helps no end.

Starring: Logan Lerman, Milla Jovovich, Matthew Macfadyen, Ray Stevenson, Luke Evans

FILM: Wedding Daze (BBC1, 11.05pm)

(2006) A young American called Anderson plans to surprise his girlfriend by dressing as Cupid and popping the question in a restaurant.

Unfortunately, it’s such a shock she has a fatal heart attack, leaving him grief-stricken and depressed.

A year later, a friend suggests it’s time he got back into the dating game, advice Anderson takes a little bit too literally when he spontaneously proposes marriage to a waitress he’s never met before.

Amazingly, she agrees, but it soon becomes apparent she has a little baggage of her own.

The film burdens the pair with a few too many wacky friends and relatives, but there’s no denying that Jason Biggs and co-star Isla Fisher make a sweet couple.

Starring: Jason Biggs, Isla Fisher, Audra Blaser, Joe Pantoliano, Edward Herrmann
