Trio stand out from nude-coloured dresses on Oscars red carpet

Oscar nominees Jennifer Lawrence, Lupita Nyong’o and Amy Adams were among the early fashion winners at Hollywood’s biggest awards show as they dazzled on the red carpet.

The women stood out in bold colours among a sea of nude-coloured dresses as they made their way into the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

'American Hustle' star Lawrence, who is nominated in the best supporting actress category, chose a narrow red Dior gown with a peplum in the hope she would be able to stay on her feet throughout the night – but to no avail.

Last year she tripped over in a huge pale pink dress with a long train as she made her way to the stage to collect her best actress Oscar for 'Silver Linings Playbook'.

Speaking to American network ABC on the red carpet, Lawrence said: “This year I did a staircase test up the back staircase and I didn’t trip up so it worked.” However, the 23-year-old still managed to take a tumble on her way into the ceremony.

Nyong’o, who will compete with Lawrence in the best supporting actress category for her role in '12 Years A Slave', chose a Grecian-style ice blue Prada dress with a silver headband.

The newcomer told ABC said she chose the colour because it reminded her of Nairobi: “We were inspired by where I grew up with a lot of blue around me. I feel very at home in this gown.”

Also in blue was another best actress nominee, Adams, who received a nod for her performance in American Hustle. She wore a navy blue strapless gown by Gucci Premiere with Tiffany & Co jewellery.

Cate Blanchett, who is favourite to take home the best actress Oscar for 'Blue Jasmine', wore a nude coloured beaded Armani dress, as did her co-star and best supporting actress nominee Sally Hawkins.

Also in nude were 'Diana' star Naomi Watts, 'Veronica Mars' actress Kristen Bell, 'Arrested Development' star Portia de Rossi and television presenter Kelly Osbourne.

While most of the male actors chose a classic black tuxedo, nominees Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto, who both hope to take home gongs for their performances in 'Dallas Buyers Club', chose white jackets.

Singer Pharrell Williams, whose song 'Happy' from 'Despicable Me 2' is nominated for best original song, made the unusual choice of teaming his traditional jacket and bow tie with Bermuda-length shorts.

Liza Minnelli was another worst-dressed contender, in this all-blue outfit.
