Here’s our tips on what’s you should watch on the box tonight.

Thursday’s TV Tips

LIFESTYLE: Super Garden (RTÉ One, 8.30pm)

‘Super Garden’ returns for a brand new series in which five up-and-coming garden designers compete to showcase their garden at this year’s 2014 Bloom Festival.

The series returns with a new mentor, Leonie Cornelius - one of Ireland’s leading garden designers and winner of the Super Garden 2012.

Fashion Designer Emma Jane, is taking on the challenge, by designing her first ever garden for an engaged couple in Dublin.

Creating a garden showcasing purely native Irish plants, Cavan man Padraig, wants to show the best of Irish horticulture using guaranteed Irish plants in a woodland paradise.

Bride-to-be Shirley creates a garden calling on all her skills to create a bio diversity haven in a garden in the centre of urban Limerick.

DOCUMENTARY: Pickpockets and Proud (TV3, 9pm)

This eye-opening documentary takes a look at pickpockets and snatchers who make their money by stealing other people’s property - revealing how they target their victims, without a thought for the consequences.

Rob Nightingale has been thieving for the past five years.

He shamelessly targets easy hits and will steal anything he can lay his hands on. In just one year alone, he reckons he’s stolen valuables worth around £100,000.

DOCUMENTARY: Wanted: A Family of My Own (UTV, 9pm)

Presenter Nicky Campbell is the perfect choice for helming this new four-part series about the life-changing process of adoption – because he was adopted himself as a baby.

For the purpose of this at times emotional programme, cameras have followed parents desperate to adopt, and the children who need families.

Among others, we’ll meet a gay couple who thought they would never become parents, a single mum adopting for the third time, and a baby boy who was born addicted to heroin.

DOCUMENTARY: Kevin’s Supersized Salvage (Channel 4, 9pm)

After two series of ‘Man Made Home’ Kevin McCloud is at it again as he challenges three designers to turn an Airbus A320 into hundreds of amazing new products.

Their challenge is to find a new use for every part of the plane, leaving only an empty hangar behind them.

If you’ve seen the amazing scene in Nicolas Cage movie ‘Lord of War’, in which bandits strip a plane to its bare bones, then you have some idea what happens here as some far more upstanding members of the community create office pods and desk lamps, rickshaws and rocking chairs, luggage, storage and even jewellery.

FILM: Saving Private Ryan (Film4, 9pm)

Steven Spielberg’s thoughtful war tale tells the story of a platoon of American soldiers (led by Tom Hanks), who are ordered to scour the battlefields of France in search of a missing infantryman.

‘Saving Private Ryan’ scooped five Oscars in 1999 (yes, it really was that long ago).

The opening scenes depicting the Normandy invasion are harrowing to say the very least and are among the most realistic ever made.

REALITY: The Takeover (RTÉ Two, 9.30pm)

The Waldorf Barbers on Dublin’s Westmoreland Street has been trading since 1929.

Father and daughter team, Liam and Linda Finnegan have very different management styles, with Linda keen to modernise and Liam opposed to change.

Will their seven staff, with the help of business mentor Norah Casey, be able to introduce some modern touches and boost business?

This is the final episode in a six-part series.

Des Bishop: Breaking China (RTÉ One, 10.15pm)

The series follows the adventures of Irish-American writer and comedian Des Bishop as he moves to China for a year in order to learn mandarin and eventually attempt to perform a one-man stand-up comedy show for a Chinese audience.

There are a couple of problems though – the locals are unaware of the subtleties of western-style comedy and are laughing for all the wrong reasons.

In tonight’s episode, in order to keep his wits sharp, Des sets up a comedy club in downtown Beijing.

His brother Aidan pays a welcome visit and performs on the opening night.

Everything is going well right up to the point where Des finds himself overpowered by grandmothers at a marriage market...

FILM: Tremors (ITV4, 10.30pm)

A dull American town comes under attack from huge man-eating subterranean creatures.

Chaos ensues, but two dim-witted but brave handymen are on hand to lead a ragtag bunch of locals and a mismatched pair of survivalists in the battle against the monsters.

‘Tremors’ is an entertaining sci-fi spoof from Ron Underwood, the director of ‘City Slickers’.

The script sends up those old B-movies of the 50s and features some clever special effects, tacked onto a fantastic plot.

Yes it’s silly, and yes it’s tacky – most of the movie is played for laughs, rather than thrills – but some genuinely exciting moments help the story along.

POLITICAL DRAMA: Boss (More4, 11pm)

Thanks to ‘Cheers’ and ‘Frasier’, Kelsey Grammer is a small-screen legend – but this could be his best role yet as ‘Boss’ returns for a second series.

Chicago Mayor Tom Kane is still battling with his degenerative brain disease, but he has to deal with the consequences of the decisions he made for the sake of his political reputation.

Meanwhile, he seals his mayoral legacy by celebrating the modernisation of the city’s airport terminals, but in looking to the future, he also sets his sights on reviving a subsidised housing project.
