Charlize Theron is in talks to star in crime thriller 'Dark Places'.

The Oscar-winning actress has entered negotiations to play troubled protagonist Libby Day in Gilles Paquet-Brenner's adaptation of Gillian Flynn's bestseller, a part which was previously expected to go to Amy Adams.

Deadline reports that director Gilles has also written the script, which centres around emotional damaged Libby, whose family was slaughtered in a horrific Satanic killing when she was seven.

Her older brother ended up in jail after she testified against him, but 25 years on she becomes involved with a group obsessed with notorious crimes and begins to unravel the truth about the fateful day.

Gillian originally commented that she "couldn't dream of someone more fantastic" than Amy for the role, but 'The Master' actress has now dropped out.

The author's dark novels are proving extremely popular as it emerged last month 'The Social Network' filmmaker David Fincher is in talks to direct a big screen adaptation of her latest book, 'Gone Girl'.

Her first novel, 'Sharp Objects', was previously optioned by Alliance with Jason Blum on board to produce.

Charlize is also discussing a role in Seth MacFarlane's new project, 'A Million Ways To Die', a spoof western comedy resembling the classic 'Blazing Saddles'.
