Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer released

The trailer for the new Star Wars film has just been released!

The teaser trailer was launched online this afternoon, sending the internet into a frenzy as fans rushed to watch it.

Wait until the one minute mark for the shot that will make fans incredibly happy.

While it's known the film takes place years after the original trilogy, the trailer shows us that imperial stormtroopers are still roaming the galaxy - and we all know what a red lightsaber means - the Sith.

But the real joy for fans is that snippet of the galaxy's fastest ship.

Plot details are still thin on the ground, but more is sure to come to light when the full-length trailer is released next year.

The JJ Abrams film is due for release in December 2015, and will feature original cast members Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher alongside newcomers Domhnall Gleeson and Gwendoline Christie.

Director JJ Abrams also directs the rebooted Star Trek franchise, which was relaunched in 2009.
