Saturday’s TV tips

That’s Entertainment (BBC2, 2.25pm)

A compilation of great moments from nearly a hundred MGM musicals. Numbers include a singing and dancing Clark Gable, and Eleanor Powell in her classic challenge dance with Fred Astaire.

Wallace and Gromit in the Curse of the Were-Rabbit (BBC1, 5.25pm)

Oscar-winning claymation about the chase for a giant rabbit terrorising a town's allotments and vegetable patches days before the annual vegetable-growing competition.

As Wallace and his trusty companion are called into action with their pest control business, the dastardly Lord Victor Quartermaine competes to capture the Were-Rabbit and win the heart of a beautiful lady.

Pointless Celebrities (BBC1, 7pm)

Alexander Armstrong presents another round of the offbeat general knowledge quiz as famous faces – or perhaps more accurately, famous voices – take part.

The line-up is drawn from BBC radio programme Test Match Special, and features Graeme Swann with Alison Mitchell, Michael Vaughan and Phil Tufnell, Melinda Farrell and Jonathan Agnew, and Ebony Rainford-Brent and Henry Blofeld.

As always, co-presenter Richard Osman is on hand to reveal the least likely correct answers to questions posed to members of the public.

The X Factor (TV3, 8pm)

X Factor veterans Simon Cowell and Cheryl Fernandez-Versin are back to pave the way for new recruits, pop sensation Rita Ora and much-loved radio DJ Nick Grimshaw.

Our favourite Xtra Factor duo, Olly Murs and Caroline Flack are making their return but this time it's for the main show.

The new series will also see the auditions move out of the rooms and straight into the arenas, with hopefuls having to perform in front of an arena audience from the start in the hope of making it through to the next stage.

Casualty (BBC1, 8.45pm)

Brace yourselves for a blast from the past. Remember Duffy, the nurse played by Cathy Shipton, who featured in the first eight series?

Well, she’s back, although this time she’s at Holby on a temporary basis, having been brought in by an agency. And it maybe Charlie that she’s covering for.

It’s all part of a major storyline that kicks off the long-running medical drama’s 30th season - and as you might expect, Charlie is in the thick of things.

He’s the only character still standing who appeared in that very first episode back in 1986, although how long for is anybody’s guess – Charlie suffers a heart attack after diving into freezing water to save Zoe’s life at her wedding reception.

While his colleagues battle to save him, they must also deal with a gunshot victim.

Side Effects (Channel 4, 9.00pm)

(2013) Office worker Emily (Rooney Mara) is crippled with anxiety about the impending release of her jailbird husband, Martin (Channing Tatum).

Top psychiatrist Jonathan Banks (Jude Law), who has been asked to assess her after a failed suicide attempt, prescribes a new medication called Ablixa to calm Emily’s nerves.

Soon after, in a drug-induced haze, the wife commits an unspeakable act and as the meda swarms, attention turns to Jonathan’s culpability for supplying the pills that led to an act of unimaginable violence.

Jonathan’s wife and business partners abandon him in his hour of need and faced with the prospect of losing his medical licence, he investigates Ablixa, aided by Emily’s former shrink, Dr Victoria Siebert (Catherine Zeta-Jones).

Sue Perkins’ Big Night Out (BBC2, 9.10pm)

Sue Perkins without Mel Geidroyc – it’s like bread without butter. And yet the pair have, over the years, made several solo forays and done rather well on their own.

So we have high hopes for this one-off programme, which Sue has squeezed in between her co-hosting duties on The Great British Bake Off. She’ll bring us highlights from the Edinburgh festivals in a programme recorded live at Potterow.

Among the acts to look out for are actor and ventriloquist Nina Conti, and comedians Phill Jupitus, Katherine Ryan and Adam Hills.

Musical highlights come from a collaboration between Scottish band Franz Ferdinand and US duo Sparks, known as FFS. So, if you didn’t make it to Edinburgh this year, then this is the show to watch.

The Xtra Factor 2015 (TV3, 9.30pm)

TV Presenter and KISS FM Radio DJ, Melvin Odoom and popstar and TV presenter, Rochelle Humes will host the popular X Factor sister show - The Xtra Factor.

The new presenting duo will be in the centre of the action, bringing the fun factor to the search to find a new music star.

They will follow the auditions across the country, getting backstage gossip, unveiling unseen footage and getting unprecedented access to The X Factor judges, Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, Nick Grimshaw, Rita Ora and Simon Cowell.

Metallica @ Reading 2015 (BBC4, 10.40pm)

Get ready to rock as the heavy metal stalwarts take the prestigious headline spot at the music festival for a record fourth time.

The band first headlined here 18 years ago, and the current line-up – James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo – will be aiming to recapture the excitement of those early days tonight.

And with such a huge back catalogue of fan favourites to choose from, the genre-defining rockers are sure to have something for everyone as they continue their sold-out world tour.

Maniac (Film4, 11.15pm)

(2012) Based on the notorious 1980 low-budget horror of the same name, Maniac is a nightmarish journey through the streets of Los Angeles shot from the perspective of a psychopath, who kidnaps female victims and scalps them.

The violence throughout Franck Khalfoun’s ambitious remake is graphic and unrelenting and the tension almost unbearable.

Elijah Wood plays mannequin restorer Frank Zito, whose traumatic childhood and creepy relationship with his mother have warped his attitude towards women.

Frank roams the city streets in his van, searching for lone women to introduce to the hunting knife he keeps tucked beneath his jacket.

His blood lust is momentarily sated when he meets artist Anna (Mora Arzeneder), but friendship turns to obsession and he struggles to control the darkness within.
