Retro chic has rocketed a 1980s TV show to the pick of the tops – as this year’s best selling T-shirt.
Fans have been re-visiting their childhood by snapping up shirts from the Transformers series, famed for its slogan “robots in disguise”.
Retailer HMV which sells hundred of thousands of T-shirts each year reports items from the show are its two biggest sellers for 2002.
Good triumphed over evil in the high street with the honourable Autobots topping the sales league, with the evil nasty Decepticons in second place
In the show vehicles would reveal themselves as shape-changing robots which would do battle each week.
Another vintage children’s show filled the third and fourth slots in the sales chart with Dangermouse and his faithful servant Penfold.
The cartoon shows beat rap, heavy metal, Star Wars and England World Cup Squad shirts in this year’s best-seller list.
HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo said:”Each year we see a trend with T-shirts and other merchandising where a character or image from the 70s or 80s suddenly becomes fashionable again through its retro appeal – both to first-time fans who grew up with it and also to students who think it might be ironically cool.
“Last year we saw it with Rainbow, but this year Dangermouse has been a massive seller. It’s the first time that the product has been available.
“Who knows, maybe next year we’ll all be fondly remembering Banana Splits.”
