Robert Redford has confirmed he is to star in Captain America: The Winter Soldier' and he will play the head of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The 76-year-old actor has signed up for the Marvel superhero sequel and will portray the boss of the law enforcement agency, the superior of super-spy Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson).

Robert was keen to appear in the action movie because he wanted to take on a role that was completely different for him.

Speaking at a publicity event for his latest film 'The Company You Keep', he revealed: "(I'm playing) the head of S.H.I.E.L.D. The 'Captain America' thing is just a very simple thing. I wanted to do something different. I wanted to do something just to be different. Something bold, different. And that felt like a good thing to do. That was it, nothing more to it than that. Well, it's bold in terms of expectations, I guess."

The film sees Chris Evans return as Steve Rogers - the titular hero - Sebastian Stan reprise his role as Sergeant James 'Bucky' Barnes, and Jackson as Fury.

Scarlett Johansson will also appear as her 'Marvel Avengers Assemble' character Black Widow, while Emily VanCamp has been cast as the female lead.

The majority of the film will take place in the present day now the captain has been transported from the 1940s to the present day.

'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' - which is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo - will be released early next year.
