Michael Parkinson is returning to TV.

Michael Parkinson is returning to TV.

The legendary chat show host - who retired in 2007 from his self-titled ITV1 Saturday night show - will present a new six-part series on Sky, which will see him interview high profile figures from the arts world about their work.

He said: "I'm delighted to be working with Sky Arts on the series and look forward to being part of the exciting times ahead for this innovative and important channel."

Channel director James Hunt added: "Sir Michael is one of our country's finest broadcasters. This new interview series will allow Sir Michael to get closer than ever before to his subject, extracting the essence of their character in a way that only he can."

The programme will also include music performances and dramatic recitals from the interviewees.

Last year, Michael slammed the belief of many celebrities that become a chat show host is "a doddle".

He said: "The trouble with the talk show is everyone fancies their chances. Even those on the extreme fringes of the ever-expanding world of modern celebrity reckon it's a doddle.

"They are encouraged in their foolish ambition by television executives who really ought to know better than to entrust the job to people who, more often than not, neither know how to ask a question nor listen to the answer."
