No new tour for Spice Girls

The Spice Girls have decided to axe a proposed 2014 tour.

The 'Viva Forever' group had reportedly been "plotting" a string of huge final farewell shows next year, but after Victoria Beckham refused to take part, the remaining band members - Geri Halliwell, Mel B, Mel C, and Emma Bunton - decided to scrap their plans.

The decision follows discussions last week amid concerns that ticket and merchandise sales would struggle if the entire quintet were not involved.

A source told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "Led by Geri, the girls had been plotting a world tour as a four-piece band, culminating in a final night at Wembley Stadium.

"The three other girls had been initially up for it, but once they started having meetings they realised the capital wasn't there.

"They also feared a general apathy from the public if Posh wasn't in the fray, leading to dates not selling out.

"Victoria's obviously a big pull when it comes to the fans and she also guarantees press coverage."

The group - who were stunned last week when it emerged 'Viva Forever!', a musical based on their hits, is to close less than year after its star-studded opening - also realised fashion designer Beckham was vital to their plans because she helped cut so many costs for their 2008 reunion tour.

The source added: "On the last tour she cut a huge amount of costs by getting sponsors, organising the designers to sort the outfits and she even persuaded Michael Jackson and Madonna's choreographer Jamie King to get involved.

"Although they all desperately wanted to do it, they couldn't take the risk of it being a flop - the Spice Girls could only ever go out on a high."

The 'Wannabe' band sold more than 80 million records between 1997 and 2000.

Halliwell quit the band in 1998, but returned for their reunion tour in 2008.

The Spice Girls also reunited for a one-off performance at the London Olympics Closing Ceremony last summer.
