Monday's TV tips

Diary of a Wimpy Kid (Film4, 3.15pm)

(2010) Greg Heffley (Zachary Gordon) is poised for his first day at Westmore Middle School with best friend Rowley Jefferson (Robert Capron).

Bidding farewell to his parents (Steve Zahn, Rachael Harris), scheming older brother Rodrick (Devon Bostick) and younger brother Manny (Connor and Owen Fielding), Greg is convinced that his good looks and natural charm will guarantee him a place among the popular kids.

Alas, the only friends he makes are the misfits including Chirag Gupta (Karan Brar) and loner Fregley (Grayson Russell).

Flying to the Ends of the Earth (C4, 8pm)

Former Royal Marine and Channel 4 Paralympics presenter Arthur Williams flies to some of the world’s smallest and most dangerous landing strips to find out why people want to live at the ends of the earth, and discover how tiny planes are opening up some of the planet’s most remote and most beautiful wildernesses.

His first journey, to Nepal in the Himalayas, reveals the dangers of flying in the mountains when local pilot Max feels the effects of low oxygen and Arthur has to take the controls.

Arthur then joins a flight to Lukla airport, one of the most dangerous in the world, and speaks to the air-traffic controllers who work there.

Life in Squares (BBC2, 9pm)

As the First World War looms, the Bloomsbury friends struggle to build a life outside London. V

Virginia weds Leonard Woolf and begins a unique, unexpectedly happy marriage, but things become strained when her health takes a turn for the worse and she overdoses on her medication.

In stark contrast to her sister, Vanessa’s relationship with her own husband is crumbling and she comes to the painful realisation that she is in love with Duncan Grant and so begins a life devoted to him, painting and her children.

Drama, starring Eve Best, Lydia Leonard and James Norton.

Disabled in an Instant (BBC3, 9pm)

The channel’s well-received Defying the Label season continues with another moving documentary, this time from Coronation Street actor and wheelchair sportsman Peter Mitchell.

He meets young people who have survived a life-changing illness or injury, but now, after treatment, are struggling to get the support they need to live as they would want.

Among them is 19-year-old Billy, who was paralysed following a motocross accident, but lives in a hotel because of the time it takes to adapt his family’s home.

Derek Ryan – The Entertainer Live! (TV3, 9.30pm)

(2011) This live recording captures much of the excitement and energy from one of Ireland’s leading Country Music performers.

Recorded in the company of an enthusiastic audience at the Iontas Theatre, it features many of the songs that have made Derek Ryan an accomplished singer-song-writer.

From his debut self-penned single ‘God’s Plan’ through the material from his four studio albums, along with many country and pop classics, this show proves that Derek Ryan really is an entertainer.

A Very British Brothel (Channel 4, 10pm)

While Blackpool has a golden mile of amusements, Sheffield has one of massage parlours – according to this eye-opening documentary anyway.

Only one is run by a mother and daughter team, who operate from a converted pub and employ largely more mature women.

But keeping the business running isn’t easy thanks to a variety of problems, from difficult clients to filling the daily rota.

This unusual family business opens its doors here, offering a very frank glimpse at an extraordinary way of life.

Friday the 13th (E4, 10.00pm)

(2009) What is this crazy, mixed-up world coming to when a group of promiscuous, bong-smoking college kids can’t spend a weekend at a waterside retreat with a grisly past, without running into a machete-wielding psychopath?

The new Friday The 13th nods and winks to Sean S Cunningham’s seminal 1980 bloodbath and adds a few twists of its own.

If you can get over the fact that the scares are few and far between, male characters are largely misogynist jerks and their female companions divide neatly into sensible girls and brazen hussies who are incapable of keeping their breasts covered, then you may enjoy it.

Otherwise, this is a curiosity piece that horror fans will lap up, if only to compare it to the original.

Jared Padalecki, Danielle Panabaker, Amanda Righetti and Derek Mears star.
