Monday’s TV tips

How the Other Half Eat (Channel 4, 7.30pm)

Food shopping these days isn’t simply a case of nipping down to the supermarket and picking up whatever takes your fancy.

Instead, there’s a startling array of products on offer, from no frills items that may lack a little finesse, to the most expensive, top-of-the-range produce whose packaging is almost a work of art in itself.

And then there’s a heap of stuff in between. This new series follows two families who live close to each other, but whose shopping and eating habits are miles apart.

They change places for four days, during which they’ll sample the food usually eaten by each other’s families. Once the experiment is over, we’ll discover whether they go back to their old ways, or change their approach for good.

FILM: The Dark Knight (ITV2, 9.00pm)

(2008) It might be a Batman movie, but this film is really about Heath Ledger’s awesome, Oscar-winning portrayal of The Joker.

Just a year after Batman (Christian Bale) saved Gotham City from elimination, crime has been wiped out - until a deranged criminal with creepy facial scars and war paint arrives to spark a new wave of chaos for one reason: because he wants to.

Batman must deal with an enemy with no real motive, who slips through his fingers at every corner.

He’s accompanied by Lieutenant Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) and new District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), but a love triangle with Batman’s former girlfriend Rachel (Maggie Gyllenhaal) threatens the team.

Life Stories: Dáil on the Dole (TV3, 9pm)

In ‘Dáil on the Dole’ four TDs spend time with people in their constituencies who are surviving on social welfare. Ordinary Irish people do not believe their representatives in the Dáil have any idea about the issues that rule their everyday lives and TDs think they work more hours than anyone on the planet. This is their chance to walk a mile in each other’s shoes.

In the third episode, Labour TD Joanna Tuffy meets local Lucan resident Mandy Boggans whose lone parent payment is due to be cut this July.

Mandy works part-time, loves her job and wants to hold onto it at all costs but is afraid that the cuts will mean she would be better off unemployed.  Mandy believes that while she's trying to improve the situation for herself and her family the Government keeps "dragging her back".

Safe House (ITV, 9pm)

Michael has a breakthrough in his hunt for the Blackwells and the police believe his arrest is imminent. However, Joe is worried he’s made a mistake that could endanger his family.

Meanwhile, an unsettled Ali makes an impulsive decision after receiving devastating news, Robert tackles Mark about past events and Katy questions the former detective further, still unsure about his methods.

Drama, starring Christopher Eccleston, Nicola Stephenson, Marsha Thomason, Peter Ferdinando and Max True.

The Stranger on the Bridge (Channel 4, 9pm)

On January 14, 2008, Jonny Benjamin headed to Waterloo Bridge with the intention of killing himself. Fortunately, a passing stranger saw him and talked him down, and Johnny was subsequently taken to hospital by the police.

In the years that followed, he was able to turn his life around, something he doesn’t think would have been possible without the intervention of the Good Samaritan he nicknamed ’Mike.“ So, six years after the incident, Jonny launched a campaign to find him, which quickly spread around the world.

This documentary looks at how the search went viral, with #findmike trending on Twitter, and is also there to capture the eventual emotional reunion. But it’s also a look at how the kindness of strangers really can change lives.

Republic of Telly (RTE Two, 10pm)

This week on Republic of Telly, Blathnaid Treacy is the ‘Jen of the Week’ special guest star! No stranger to interviewing the most famous names in the music biz, Blathnaid lands her biggest scoop to date when she tracks down Ed Sheeran’s long lost brother, Ned Sheeran, and investigates the tall tales he has to divulge…

Ballot Monkeys (Channel 4, 10pm)

It’s not just Britain’s politicians who have been glued to the news over the past few weeks – writers Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin have also had to keep abreast of all the latest developments for this highly topical sitcom, which is written just hours ahead of transmission.

Perhaps fortunately for them, the end is in sight, but there’s no time for the characters to relax, as with just three days to go until the British General Election, the pressure is building on battle buses - and let’s face it, they were pretty tense to start with.
