The Government has reportedly proposed that a new limited company take over the running of the Abbey Theatre in Dublin.
Reports this morning said the company would replace the National Theatre Society that has run the facility since its foundation in 1904.
The reports said the Government would appoint the chair of the new company and two other board members, while the other six would be chosen by a selection committee.
The move would effectively abolish the shareholding body that currently owns the theatre and elects much of its board.
The changes, which are reportedly backed by the Abbey's directors and the Arts Council, are a response to the loss of €1.85m at the theatre last year, more than twice the initially reported figure.
