Ryan Gosling thinks of his muscles as his pets.

The 'Gangster Squad' hunk doesn't understand women's fascination with his muscular body and has likened his defined biceps and chiseled abs to animal companions you have to keep feeding - which are actually "pointless".

He joked: "Anyone can get those if they work at it. It's just a lot of exercising. And it's really quite pointless, because you go to a gym and you lift a heavy thing so a muscle grows, but the only thing the muscle can actually do is to lift that heavy thing.

"After a while they're like pets because they don't do anything useful. But you have to feed them and take care of them otherwise they'll go away. I feel a bit goofy having them, to tell you the truth."

The 32-year-old star - who is dating Eva Mendes - revealed he has a strange and equally "goofy" source of inspiration every time he gets into character, in the form of Warner Bros cartoon characters.

He confessed: "When I take on a new role, the first thing I do is to figure out what percentage of the character is Bugs Bunny and what percentage is Daffy Duck. Seriously - that works every time for me."
