Plus, the extreme kayakers who gain thrills and excitement from traversing the area’s raging waterfalls are observed, as are the native cowboys, known as gauchos, as they round up wild horses.

Strictly Come Dancing (BBC1, 9pm)

Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman host the first of this weekend’s two live shows, which sees six of the 15 famous faces join forces with their professional partners to battle it out on the dance floor and convince judges Len Goodman, Craig Revel Horwood, Bruno Tonioli and Darcey Bussell that they can trip the light fantastic with style and grace.

This year’s participants are Jeremy Vine, Katie Derham, Ainsley Harriott, Kellie Bright, Georgia May Foote, Carol Kirkwood, Peter Andre, Daniel O’Donnell, Anthony Ogogo, Jay McGuiness, Anita Rani, Jamelia, Helen George, Iwan Thomas and Kirsty Gallacher.

But who will follow in the fleet-footed steps of 2014 winner Caroline Flack and take the crown this year?

Punk icon John Lydon, perhaps still best known as Johnny Rotten of Sex Pistols fame – talks to Piers about his life and career.

The musician looks back on his controversial rise to fame and notoriety in the band that sent shockwaves through the music industry during the late 1970s, and made headline news with anti-establishment hits such as Anarchy in the UK and God Save the Queen.

He also reflects on the tragic death of bandmate Sid Vicious, from a drug overdose at the age of 21.

Still performing with his band Public Image Ltd – whose latest single Double Trouble came out last month – and now living in Los Angeles, John talks about life, love and whether he has mellowed as he is about to turn 60.

The Great British Bake Off: An Extra Slice (BBC2, 10pm)

Presenter Jo Brand invites three celebrity fans of BBC One’s mouth-watering baking contest to discuss the good and the bad of this week’s episode, in which the challenges included making 24 cream horns for the signature challenge and a brief to create a religieuse a l’ancienne, namely three tiers of choux pastry eclairs filled with creme pat, iced and decorated with buttercream, for the showstopper round.

There is also unseen footage from the programme and an interview with the latest contestant to be eliminated.

Alan Carr: Chatty Man (Ch4, 10pm)

If you can’t get enough of Strictly Come Dancing, then you’re in luck as fleet footed hosts Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly will be joining Alan Carr in the studio for the odd tipple and chinwag.

The Bafta award-winning funnyman is also joined by actors Kristen Wiig, Chiwetel Ejiofor (soon to be seen in Doctor Strange) and Fantastic Four’s Kate Mara. They’ll be chatting about new sci-fi blockbuster The Martian.

They’re in town to plug the movie version helmed by Ridley Scott, and will no doubt be recalling some of the funnier moments that occurred during filming.

Of course Doctor Who is no stranger to the red planet, and Peter Capaldi will also be dropping into the studio to plug the new series.

If Graham and his guests leave your laughter muscles exhausted, there’s a chance to recover as the Weeknd perform their new single, Can’t Feel My Face.

Each time Colter is transported back into the parallel reality, he gathers intelligence about his fellow passengers including businessmen Max Denoff (Russell Peters) and student Derek Frost (Michael Arden). Source Code is an adrenaline-pumping thrill ride that plays loose and fast with our notions of space and time.

The Children (BBC2, 12.35am)

(2008) The snow is deep and crisp as Elaine (Eva Birthistle) and her husband Jonah (Stephen Campbell-Moore) travel by car with their kids – truculent teenager Casey (Hannah Tointon), Miranda (Eva Sayer) and Paulie (William Howes) – to spend yuletide with Chloe (Rachel Shelley), her beau Robbie (Jeremy Sheffield) and their tearaways Nicky (Jake Hathaway) and Leah (Rafiella Brookes).

One by one, the brats fall ill and experience disorienting visions of carnage and mayhem. As bloodlust takes hold, the urchins strike out at the adults with terrifying consequences.

Director Tom Shankland’s gruesome horror conjures a hellish vision of the festive season, pitting two couples against the cherubic offspring they have raised their entire lives.
