Friday’s TV tips

FILM: The Mummy Returns (3e, 7pm)

(2001) The mummified body of Imhotep is shipped to a museum in London, where he once again wakes and begins his campaign of rage and terror.

Starring: Brendan Fraser

SPORT: Euro 2016 Qualifier Live (ITV, 7.15pm)

England look to maintain their 100-per-cent record in the qualifying campaign when they entertain Lithuania in this Group E clash at Wembley Stadium.

The hosts have recorded victories over Switzerland, Estonia, San Marino and Slovenia, and they will expect that run to continue in their first ever meeting against the Lithuanians. The visitors have faced the same opponents as England and have won half their games so far, losing the other two.

Although Roy Hodgson is unlikely to experiment too much it will be interesting to see who is selected up front. Uncapped Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane has been in fine form this season, but he faces stiff competition from the group’s leading scorer Danny Welbeck, the fit again Daniel Sturridge and captain Wayne Rooney.

Whoever gets the nod will be keen to get among the goals and thrill a Wembley crowd that has not always been enthused by the football on display in recent years.

QUIZ: Mastermind (BBC2, 9pm)

More than 40 years after its debut, this stripped-down quiz is still a force to be reckoned with in an age of slick graphics, complex formats and big money prizes.

The Falklands Conflict, Renaissance noblewoman Caterina Sforza, Paul Scott’s novel sequence The Raj Quartet, 19th-century prime minister Lord Palmerston, the Ashes between 1964 and 1981 and the life of ballet dancer Rudolph Nureyev are the specialist subjects in this series finale.

However, as regular fans of this long running series know, contestants can know their pet subjects inside out, but their general knowledge can let them down, so it’ll be interesting to see who’s the best all rounder as host John Humphrys asks the questions.

Clive Dunning clinched victory during the last series, partly thanks to his knowledge of the life and poetry of Philip Larkin, but once it’s started, who will finish this series... with their head held high?

DRAMA: NCIS: New Orleans (Channel 5, 9pm)

One of the oldest plotlines in the book is a killer who uses the ideas from novels as the inspiration for their own slayings.

It formed the basis for John Cusack’s under-rated thriller The Raven, and now the Louisiana-based procedural drama reworks the tried and tested formula for its own show.

It’s Halloween, and a woman found in a cemetery with what look like vampire bites on her neck and dressed to resemble Count Dracula’s first victim.

Dwayne Pride and the team are called to investigate, and when another body is discovered with all the signs of having been given post-mortem electric shocks by a contemporary Victor Frankenstein, our long suffering crime busters wonder if they are dealing with a killer who has a penchant for classic horror novels.

And in the latest sub-plot, Brody enjoys a flirtation with a psychiatrist.

Scott Bakula, Lucas Black, Zoe McLellan and Rob Kerkovich head the cast.

FILM: Fright Night (BBC Three, 9pm)

(2011) Charlie Brewster is an ordinary, slightly nerdy teenager living in a Las Vegas suburb with his single mum Jane – until the mysterious Jerry Dandridge moves in next door.

Handsome and charming, he makes every woman in the area swoon, but Charlie begins to wonder if Jerry might not be all he seems – in fact, he thinks Jerry is a vampire and enlists magician Peter Vincent to help him uncover the truth.

Although not as good as the cult 1985 comedy horror that inspired it, there is much to applaud about this remake (or should that be revamp?), not least the cast, which is headed by Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell and David Tennant.

Toni Collette also appears, as does the original film’s star, Chris Sarandon, in a cameo role.

Starring: Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, David Tennant, Toni Collette

FILM: Atonement (Film4, 9pm)

(2007) Set in the 1930s, it follows 13-year-old aspiring writer Briony, who can’t help but notice that something is going on between her beautiful, educated and very posh older sister Cecilia and servant’s son Robbie.

However, it seems the teen isn’t quite as perceptive as she likes to think, and after forming the wrong impression makes a serious accusation about Robbie that will that will have serious consequences for all involved.

Although it might not have done as well at the Oscars as some critics predicted, this romantic epic, adapted from Ian McEwan’s acclaimed novel, has style, power and intelligence.

There are strong performances from Keira Knightley and James McAvoy as the young lovers. However, even they are upstaged by the extraordinary Saoirse Ronan as the young Briony.

Starring: Keira Knightley, James McAvoy, Brenda Blethyn, Saoirse Ronan, Romola Garai, Vanessa Redgrave, Harriet Walter

FILM: Glory (BBC Two, 11.35pm)

(1989) Historical drama chronicling the story of the first black soldiers to fight in the American Civil War, and the inexperienced officer given the job of training them.

While they are fighting on the side of emancipation, they find themselves victims of the same prejudices that have dogged them all their lives, and vow to prove their doubters wrong.

Moving, powerful and historically accurate, it’s one of the best war movies of recent times and boasts performances from some of Hollywood’s biggest names at the peak of their powers.

The scene in which Denzel Washington’s character is whipped has become an iconic screen moment, and the ending will not leave a dry eye in the house.

Starring: Matthew Broderick, Cary Elwes, Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington
