Feeling the love for The Coronas at Electric Picnic

As the crowds continued to fill Electric Picnic, The Coronas were waiting for no-one.

The Dublin band kicked this year’s festivities off at the bright and early time of 7:15pm on The Main Stage.

Now, if you’re anything like us, you’ve probably witnessed the band play live on a few occasions and are well aware that they never fail to disappoint - and this was no different.

Fans literally ran as fast as they could to the stage the minute the first chord resonate with them, something I was surprised at, but overjoyed to see.

They kicked the set off with an explosive Mark my Words, and just by giving a quick glance around the crowd I wasn’t able to point out one person that wasn’t singing along.

From teens to toddlers, yes toddlers, sure it was only 7:30pm.

As the crowds continued to join, frontman Danny sat back and let us do a bit of the singing.

And if I must say myself, we gave him an amazing rendition of Just like That.

They continued to belt out hit after hit - Someone Else’s Hands, The Long Way, How This Goes and Get Loose - and fed off every bit of the crowd’s first-day-festival excitement.

*Release the balloons* (You can imagine the toddlers’ excitement).

Then it all got a little emotional for me, along with the rest of the crowd.

“This is our very first time playing at Electric Picnic,” Danny announced before launching in Heroes and Ghosts as gaeilge.

As we all know success didn't come easy for The Coronas.

They've had to fight, and have fought for everything.

Without a record company or dominant cheerleaders in the press, they built their following gradually among the pub circuit, and it was in that moment you could feel the entire crowd just wanting to give them a big mammy hug.

You did it guys!

“We never thought we’d be cool enough to play Electric Picnic, but thank you for making us feel so welcome,” he added.

Then, they went on to explain their next song was wrote about a night in Copper Face Jacks, Close to You - talk about a mood killer.

But of course they knocked that one out of the park too.

And how does one end a set at Electric Picnic? Crowd surfing of course.
