Eighties pop heart-throb Jason Donovan is embracing the dark side by playing the Demon Barber Of Fleet Street on the British stage.

The Too Many Broken Hearts singer and former Neighbours actor will play the villain in a nationwide tour of Stephen Sondheim's musical Sweeney Todd, which starts in Brighton, England, on January 31.

Donovan's friend says: "Jason tends to play nicer characters so it'll be interesting to see him as a cold blooded killer who slits the throats of his clients before his accomplice turns them into pies."
