Daniel Craig inspects UN's mine-clearing work in Cyprus

Actor Daniel Craig’s globetrotting has brought him to Cyprus – but not to film any scene as superspy James Bond.

Craig was on the island to inspect the United Nations’ work to clear minefields, a vestige of conflict that divided this east Mediterranean state along ethnic lines.

The UN said Craig inspected a live minefield now being cleared by a Cambodian de-mining team.

He also toured the UN-controlled buffer zone that separates an internationally recognised Greek Cypriot south from a breakaway Turkish Cypriot north.

Cyprus was split in 1974 when Turkey invaded after a coup by supporters of union with Greece.

The actor’s Cyprus trip is his first since being appointed UN Global Advocate for the Elimination of Mines and Explosive Hazards.
