Beckham's wife 'excited' about life after football

Victoria Beckham has led tributes to her husband David Beckham following his retirement from soccer.

The fashion designer - who has four children, Brooklyn, 14, Romeo, 10, Cruz, eight, and 21-month-old daughter Harper, with the hunk - praised the 38-year-old star for being an "inspiration" to her and their kids throughout his career and admitted they are "so proud" of his "incredible" achievements.

She said: "The children and I are so proud of David, it's been an incredible journey for us all as we have watched him play at clubs all over the world throughout the last 15 years.

"Myself and the children have cheered him from the stands, as he has held high trophies with his teams at Manchester United, Real Madrid, A.C. Milan, LA Galaxy and Paris Saint-Germain.

"This was not an easy decision to make, and to me and the children he will always be an amazing sportsman and a devoted husband and father.

"He is, and will always remain, a true ambassador for sport and is not just an inspiration to myself and our children but for millions of people worldwide.

"We are all excited about the next chapter in our lives and the adventures we will explore as a family."

Several stars took to Twitter to heap praise on David following his announcement yesterday including British Prime Minister David Cameron.

The politician - who supports Premier League side Aston Villa - wrote: "David Beckham has been an outstanding footballer throughout his career."

Mayor of London Boris Johnson tweeted: "Best wishes to David Beckham and his family on news of his retirement from football - great guy and exemplary ambassador for London 2012."

Comedian Jack Whitehall also paid tribute to the former England captain - who played 115 times for his country - and his ever-changing hairstyle.

He wrote: "Becks retiring changes nothing I will still go to the hairdresser as I've done since I was 13 and ask him to make me look like David Beckham (sic)"

Beckham announced he was retiring "at the top" yesterday, just days after helping his current club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) win their first Ligue 1 title for 19 years, but has admitted he realised it was time to hang up his boots when he found it tough coming up against World Footballer of the Year Lionel Messi in a recent match.

Asked when he made his decision, he joked: "Probably when Messi was running past me."
