Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has clung to the top spot at the US box office for a second consecutive weekend.

The dark remake of Roald Dahl’s beloved classic, which opens in Ireland this weekend, has so far taken $114.1m (€94.5m) in America.

It held off competition from Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson’s raunchy comedy Wedding Crashers, which stood firm in second place.

Ewan McGregor’s new thriller The Island failed to make waves, opening at number four, behind the Fantastic Four comic book superheroes.

Bad New Bears, starring Billy Bob Thornton as a sports team coach, debuted in fifth place.

Meanwhile, the sleeper hit of the summer, March of the Penguins, cracked the top 10. The Antarctic documentary, narrated by Morgan Freeman, has won rave reviews and packed cinemas despite competing with big budget Hollywood blockbusters such as Batman Begins.

Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster War Of The Worlds has become the second biggest film of the year in North America, closing in on Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.
