Williams' fate in the balance
21/04/2005 - 08:16:12Matt Williams faces an anxious few hours as the Scottish Rugby Union meet to discuss his future today.
Having completed their review of a poor RBS 6 Nations, which has included seeking players’ opinions on where things went wrong, the Murrayfield chiefs are in a position to make decisions.
Many of the nation’s rugby fans and a number of high-profile former players hold national coach Williams responsible for a disappointing campaign which saw Scotland win just one game – against Italy – and they have not been shy in calling for his head.
The Australian remains defiant in the face of criticism which has mounted since he took over from Ian McGeechan in December 2003 but there are suggestions that his tenure has just hours to run.
The SRU were giving little away but a spokesperson said: “We have been conducting a review of the Six Nations campaign in terms of information gathering.
“That is now complete and what is happening now is that they will be assimilating the information gathered and going into assessing it.”
