Value of ISEQ equities plummets by €56bn

The total value of equities traded on the ISEQ index of Irish shares fell from €96bn a year ago to €40.8bn at the end of September 2009.

Activity on the Exchange was comparable to last year (1.75 million trades in the year to date compared to 1.85 million over the same nine months a year ago), but their value fell sharply in the period in common with markets around the world.

Over the nine months, 19 companies raised a total of €1.92bn on the market; the most significant fund raising this quarter was an Elan share placing which raised €521m in September.

Turnover in government bonds and treasury bills was €112bn in the first nine months of 2009, with turnover in quarter three being more than five times the turnover recorded in the same period in 2008 (€49.5bn compared to €9.1bn last year).

The review of activity on the Exchange in the year to date, which was released today, highlighted that all ISEQ indices showed double-digit growth in quarter three.
