Two held in connection with gun and drug finds
02/11/2007 - 19:24:32A man and a woman have been arrested during a wave of raids that uncovered several firearms and a large stash of drugs, it emerged tonight.
Four sawn-off shotguns and three pistols - one of them fully loaded - was recovered in the swoop on several locations throughout Co Kildare.
Ammunition was also seized along with around €100,000 worth of cocaine, drugs paraphernalia, mace and balaclavas.
The two people arrested, both in their 30s, are being held at Kildare and Newbridge Garda Stations under the provisions of Section 30, Offences Against the State Act.
Investigating officers said the searches followed an operation in the Curragh on Wednesday night during which a motorist was "intercepted".
The uniformed patrol that stopped the driver was backed up by Garda units involved with Operation Anvil, which is targeting gangland and gun crime.
A Garda spokesman said: "Throughout last night and continuing throughout today a number of searches have been conducted at locations throughout the Kildare area.
"This operation is far from being concluded and a number of searches are continuing."
Chief Superintendent Michael Byrnes and Superintendent John Murphy from Carlow and Kildare division, along with a number of Garda national units, are involved.
